Tutoring

Saturday Tutor Teams
PS 112
Saturday
10:30-12:00

The Ravenswood II “I Have a Dream” Saturday Tutor Teams Program provides academic support and cultural enrichment through one to one tutorial sessions with volunteers.

As a volunteer in the Saturday Tutor Teams Program, you will be matched with a student whom you will work with each Saturday. Individualized lesson plans focus on the specific skills on which the student needs to improve in order to be successful in school. A typical lesson may include reading a passage with the child and then having him or her do a short writing assignment related to the book’s content. Supervision and support will be provided by our Education Coordinator. In order to create and maintain the relationship and consistency that is needed for the children to make academic progress, we ask that you make a commitment to stick with the program until the end of the current school year. This type of commitment will foster a positive relationship that can be very rewarding. While the primary purpose of Saturday Tutor Teams is to provide academic assistance, there will be opportunities to interact with the children in social and recreational atmospheres.

After-School Homework Help
PS 112
Monday-Thursday
4:00-6:00

The academic portion of our after-school program includes group homework help sessions each day in order to ensure that the children understand the content of their work and are motivated to complete their assignments.

As a volunteer in our After-School Homework Help sessions, you will have the opportunity to work with many different children. While program staff will always be in the room and available to answer questions, due to the nature of the program the high level of support for volunteers that is provided during Saturday Tutor Teams is not available during the after-school hours. Volunteers must be able to engage the students and work with them independently. While we do not require a minimum commitment from volunteers for this program and scheduling is fairly flexible, we do ask that you attend consistently on whichever day of the week you are available. This volunteer opportunity may be combined with the recreational opportunities described below.

Activity Specialist

Arts, Recreation, and Education Assistant
PS112
Monday-Thursday
3:30-6:00

In addition to homework help and tutoring, the Ravenswood II "I Have a Dream" Program is also dedicated to conducting arts, recreation, and interactive academic programming to supplement what the Dreamers may or may not receive during the school-day. Mondays and Wednesdays are generally used for recreation time outside or in the gym. Activities include free time, team sports, or group games. On Tuesdays we run arts and crafts workshops, our Youth Health Literacy Program, and other special workshops that can be either one day events or long-term projects. In past arts and crafts workshops, Dreamers have created everything from personalized t-shirts to chili pepper pinatas and nutter-butter turkeys. Thursdays are reserved for academic enrichment through creative writing, hands-on science experiments, and interactive current event workshopsm.

Bring Your Own Activity
PS112
Monday-Saturday
Times are flexible

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their interests and talents to the program. Activities may include but are not limited to: voice, dance, musical instruction, theater, visual arts, sports, martial arts, etc. Check out all of the special workshops that the kids have already benefitted from thanks to individuals or community groups. We invite you to discuss your ideas with us so that we may work together to create a meaningful experience for both you and the children.

Donating

The Ravenswood II "I Have a Dream" Program accepts in-kind donations. We are currently seeking educational supplies and materials on fourth and fifth grade levels. In addition, you can help us expand our health initiative by donating sporting goods or healthy foods for snack.
